Prof. Carme Jordi is full professor at the University of Barcelona. She also belongs to the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB) and the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC). Her research field includes the physical characterization of single and binary stars and of open clusters, based on astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic observations from ground and space.
She has been involved in space missions such as Hipparcos and INTEGRAL of the European Space Agency (ESA). Since 1998, she has been fully engaged in the astrometric space project Gaia. She co-led the design of the photometric instrument, and currently she is working on the calibration of the photometric data and the validation of the data as a whole. She is member of the Gaia Science Team, the scientific advisory body of ESA for this mission.
Based on the first data releases of the Gaia mission, she has contributed to the characterization of the open clusters population, mainly by unraveling hundreds of open clusters unnoticed until now using artificial intelligence techniques. This provides a new scenario for the study of the structure and evolution of the Galactic disk.
Carme is also involved in large spectroscopic surveys from ground like Gaia-ESO, OCCASO and the near-future WEAVE project.
Interested in the dissemination of science to the society, she has been involved for years in outreach activities, activities for students at all levels and in lectures for the elderly.
